Practical meets "Cool" By Donna Robinson
"I am a travel nanny so luggage has to be extremely practical in terms of how it packs, rolls and length of handle. My Zebra from IT had worn out after 16 months in terms of my use, still good enough to give to Goodwill! I had to have a 24" expandable for long travel work jobs and winter jobs.
What I like: packs on both sides, polycarbon on sides where a suitcase takes a beating and it's swirling design so maybe won't show scratches as much, bottom has rubber guard across and up about 6" on back, plus 3 handles, top, side and bottom (never had that before) making it easy to grab off.
Large zip pocket in front for last minute items or maybe dirty clothes! Inside the expandable part is the bottom which is better than the zipper part and the handle doesn't take as much room as some do. The handle is high and has a good gripper on bottom for easy on the hands.
I love that the handle expands high as spinners are useless with short handles! The inside zipper side has a place for a pair of shoes, see through mesh pocket and the expandable has a zipped pocket inside.
The zipped compartment even has a place to put any hanger if you want to do dress or jacket. Also has clips on the bottom to keep the jacket/dress anchored. Mine had the clips but no strap to attach but one quick call to Ricardo and it's being sent to me.
Strange but maybe useful: Inside big zipped outside pocket has a holder to attach a buddy suitcase to it. The Ricardo people said to pull it straight out and zip up to it and the zipper can handle the stress, guaranteed! Odd place for it to be and will be curious if zipper stays zipped if used this way?
It is light and just packed 14 t's, 3 sweaters, 3 skirts, 1 dressy dress and sweater jacket, 7 jeans, 2 knee high pants, 2 bathing suits, 2 pairs of shoes, water shoes, usual personals, flat laying ebag accessory bag(shampoos etc) and odds and ends we do as we go along.. Weight after packed: 35 lbs.
CS: so far-answers phone, emails promptly, answers questions cheerful personnel and is fixing an older purchase on an inexpensive duffle they sold with a good attitude.
July 6th it takes off for it's first international flight so will see then if it handle the baggage handlers, continues to wear well despite the ten trips it is bound to take in a year.
Edit: Ricardo makes a practical suitcase but they have a problem with their side and front pocket zippers. They really need to get a new supplier. The zipper pull on the front pocket (which like most are pretty useless anyway) broke, not the zipper just the pull itself so you can't attach a pull tag to it. This is the second zipper problem I have had with a Ricardo product so feel they need a new supplier. They were good about fixing on a different suitcase, but it does mean you have to either mail to the repair shop which is a pain or drive the 90 min to the shop. I was thrilled when I saw this suitcase offered. I've had a Ricardo of Beverly Hills 21 inch carry-on bag for years. I've loved it and used it a lot. It's stayed in almost perfect shape, despite all the traveling, rolling on city streets and sidewalks and baggage handlers (although most of the time, I carry it on). I've loaded it with books and taken it to events, it's been all over the world and hardly shows use at all. The only problems came from over-zealous, idiot TSA agents shortly after 9/11. They pried off the Ricardo name plate, thinking it was somehow the lock, so that hangs by one rivet and they managed to pull off the zipper tags from the front pocket. Other than that, it looks practically new.
I am planning a longer trip and needed a larger suitcase and have been looking for another Ricardo of Beverly Hills that matched the aubergine color of my original. (I love it almost always being the only suitcase of it's kind and color on a baggage carousel and I love purple.) I was thrilled to find this one. I love the hard sides and soft top and it's almost exactly like my existing suitcase. I fully intend for it to last just as long as the original (which is still going strong!).Poor Quality By Debbie from Florida
The first time I used the suitcase the stiching came apart. The second time a zipper pull fell off. When I contacted the company they told me that the "life-time" warranty does not cover general wear and tear. In my opinion a manufacturer should realize that general wear and tear shoudl not happen after two uses.I will never buy another Ricardo Beverly Hills piece of luggage again.
