I absolutely adore this luggage set. I'd been using the same big red Jeep suitcases that I got at a yard sale almost ten years ago, until on my last trip (on my way out, of course!) the wheel broke off and my passage through the airport echoed with a mortifying nonstop "kuromp-dit-kuromp-dit."
Since I'd been coveting other people's designer luggage for years, I really wanted to make sure that I got a set I would be in love with. I also wanted something classy, not garish, and something unique. Obviously spinner wheels were a requirement. I wanted an unusual and bright color or design. I spent a lot of time looking at the shiny hard sided colorful sets on the internet. CalPak, Rockland, and Heys all had lots of attractive designs, but the luggage seemed all the same on the inside.
I found just what I wanted--The Rimowa Salsa Deluxe Hybrid IATA Cabin Multiwheel. Except, I couldn't affor $700 for one piece. What I wanted was three pieces for about $300. I ended up paying a little more, but it was worth it.
The salient feature of the Rimowa that I loved were the outside compartments. I was used to putting last minute necessities into the outside compartments of my soft sided luggage. I knew I would miss that, and when you add in the fact that hard sided luggage needs to open out flat, it seemed like my new luggage might turn out to be less useful than my old set.
Enter Heys Immix, the answer to my prayers. The was the only other luggage I found that was hard-sided with spinner wheels and outside storage compartments. The descriptions sounded good, but I really didn't feel like I knew what to expect. I thought this could go great, or I could be in for a disappointment. But I felt like with the other options, I knew what I was getting, and here was a chance to be surprised. I was!
I was so ecstatic when my luggage arrived (fast delivery, giant smashed up box!). I couldn't really tell from the pictures how the luggage would look--I could only find the same stock photos. Well, they arrived looking gorgeous! I wasn't sure if they would turn out more yellow or more orange, but honey, they are GOLD. Gorgeous gold! A sky cap on my maiden voyage would not stop talking about how he's never seen a color like that.
All three of the pieces are identical versions of each other. The carry-on has all of the amenities of the large suitcase. And boy, are there amenities! I cannot understand why this product is not advertised with more pictures and detail, because it is fascinating! I kept unzipping compartments and exclaiming, "Oh! Look at this! And there's this!" It was one exciting surprise after another.
The outside texture is thick but light. It's not hard like a wall; it can smash in and pop out. My old soft-sided luggage had an expandable side with an extra zipper, but I don't miss it here. The large piece can hold tons of stuff! I was worried that the hard-side luggage would weigh too much more and limit my packing, but I didn't suffer on my first trip.
These pieces are so luxurious, and try so hard to "wow" you with perks! The TSA-approved lock is fine and fancy. It's a combination lock that the TSA can override with their skeleton key. The zipper pulls and Luggage ID tag are made from a soft gold leather with nice stitching. The The inside of the suitcase is filled with organizers and extra storage. The inside of the outside compartment is packed with fantastic organizational pockets! I'll try to explain (why are there no pictures of these wondrous guts!?).
The outside pocket is like its own little backpack. There is a main compartment with two smaller zipper compartments on top of it. Inside the main compartment there are three flat elastic pouches, a mesh pouch, three pencil slots, and four small ID type pouches. HOW FREAKING CONVENIENT to not have to open up and spread out your carry on to find your magazine. On the inside, there is a top zippered compartment with an x-shaped elastic clasp to hold that half of your stuff down. There is an organizational panel that clips over the bottom half of the suitcase. It has two mesh pockets for the things you need to get at easily (I'm thinking toothbrush and undies). All of the linings can be unzipped. All of the zippers have sturdy, attractive HEYS emblem pulls. Everything matches. There is a velcro buffer lining the unzippered seam of the suitcase.
The only worries I have are the thick plastic zipper that seems wont to warp, and the relatively small wheels (don't break off!). I'm also realistic about how long I can keep the luggage looking pristine. After my first short nonstop flight, the checked piece definitely came out a little dirty. Here is a lesson I learned--don't put pointy-shaped things in your outer compartment unless you want a dirt shadow of that thing pressed into the surface of your suitcase. I guess they must have scooted my luggage down the conveyor belt belly down, and the silhouette of a rectangular box came out impressed on my nice bumpy gold canvas. I wiped it with a microfiber towel and some dish soap, and it mostly came out. I was afraid I might have bleached the canvas a little, so watch out for that. Oh, and the leather zipper pull tags got all dirty, which is just going to stay a sad reality. I'll let you know if anything terrible happens after I take the big guy overseas.
I am SO SO HAPPY with these suitcases. I've been getting compliments from everyone who sees them. I respond, "I KNOW!? Aren't they great!? I just got them and I love them. Look at this!" They are fashionable, functional, well-made, unique, and gorgeous. Now when I go pick up my bags, I don't have to check my tags. Nobody else's luggage comes down the runway looking like mine. :)
